Baisha Island - The West Coast Town in China
Located just east of Zhujiajian, Baisha Island is a small island with a charming seaside town that strangely resembles a typical west coast fishing village in South Africa. At first sight, visitors might feel as if a coastal settlement from somewhere between Paternoster and Port Nolloth has somehow been transported across the ocean and placed beside the Chinese mainland.

The strong scent of seawater and fresh fish creates a familiar coastal atmosphere, especially for visitors who have experienced similar seaside villages elsewhere. The landscape and ocean breeze can even inspire a sense of nostalgia and make people momentarily feel far away from China.
However, that feeling quickly disappears when a local resident approaches and speaks in Chinese instead of Afrikaans, immediately reminding you that you are still standing on a small island off the coast of China.
A Paradise for Fishing Enthusiasts
Baisha Island is largely focused on recreational fishing, and this theme can be seen throughout the island. Shortly after arriving, visitors are welcomed by large signs featuring fishermen casting their lines from rocky shores.
The island offers many different fishing locations, and information boards and maps show the types of fish available at each area. For fishing lovers, the island appears to be an ideal destination.
According to local tourism information, Baisha Island was the first fishing-themed recreational destination of its kind developed in China.
Exploring the Island on Foot
A scenic walking path surrounds the entire island, providing visitors with an enjoyable way to discover its natural beauty. The trail is well maintained, paved, and includes distance markers along the route, making it easy to follow.
Walking around the island allows travellers to experience its peaceful coastline, observe the fishing areas, and enjoy the views of the surrounding sea. Because of its small size, the island can be explored comfortably at a relaxed pace.
Food and Local Facilities
Baisha Island has several seafood restaurants where visitors can enjoy fresh local dishes. The restaurants provide convenient places to rest and have a meal after exploring the island.
For snacks and drinks, however, visitors may want to prepare ahead. There is a small shop selling basic refreshments, but the variety of products available is limited.
Bringing personal snacks and supplies can make the visit more comfortable, especially for those planning to spend a full day exploring.
A Relaxing Escape from City Life
A full day on Baisha Island can easily be spent walking, taking photographs, enjoying the scenery, and simply slowing down. Although the island is relatively small, it offers impressive coastal views and plenty of quiet spaces where visitors can escape the crowded atmosphere of urban life.
For people living in busy cities such as Shanghai, Baisha Island provides a refreshing weekend retreat. It is an excellent place to relax, enjoy nature, and experience a slower rhythm of life.
However, unless visitors are passionate about fishing or enjoy long periods of quiet isolation, staying longer than two days may begin to feel repetitive due to the island’s limited activities.
How to Reach Baisha Island
Because Baisha Island is surrounded by water, the only way to reach it is by boat. Ferries leave from a dock near Black Pebble Beach, with tickets costing around 20 RMB per person.
The easiest way to reach the ferry dock is by taxi or Didi. Showing the driver the location on a map application should help them find the correct departure point.
The ferry schedule is limited. The first boat usually leaves around 9 a.m., while the final return trip departs in the afternoon at approximately 4 p.m.
The journey from the mainland to Baisha Island takes around 20 to 30 minutes, making it a convenient destination for a short coastal getaway.
