Background

The novel is not only a tale about scientific ambition. Its nested narration asks who gets believed, how responsibility is evaded, and what happens when a person is denied education and community. The creature’s eloquence complicates the labels others place on him.

Reading notes

  • Map the narrators and note what each one wants the listener to believe.
  • Compare Victor’s language of creation with the creature’s account of learning and exclusion.
  • Ask at each turning point whether a character accepts responsibility or transfers blame.
